College for Kids offers enrichment opportunities for kids and teens ages 5-16. Classes are designed to develop new interests, teach meaningful skills and excite students about learning. Scroll down to see all of the classes for Summer 2018 or download the catalog here.

How to enroll

To register, click the blue register online button to the right.  If you are enrolling more than one child, each child must be enrolled separately.  Registration works best from a personal computer or laptop, not a mobile device.  When checking out do not create an account, just check out unregistered.

Refund Policy

We must guarantee a minimum enrollment to hold a camp. If you need to withdraw, please contact the Community Education office, 816.604.3011 at least five (5) business days prior to the camp start date. You may request a full refund – minus a $5 processing fee. No refund will be given for camps canceled fewer than five business days prior to the start of the camp.

Minecraft© Modders - Black Rocket 
Use your favorite game to learn the basics of modding and foundations of programming. Learn scripting and logic statements as you create your first mods! Introductory coding will also be taught through a simulated environment inspired by Minecraft. Student projects will be available on a password protected Black Rocket website to share with friends and family. To access their project at home students must own a PC/MAC version of Minecraft. Tablet, phone, and game console versions of Minecraft are not compatible. Students will work in pairs or teams for most of the program. Returning students can create more advanced projects that build on previous years

Enchanted Academy Workshop  Young Rembrandts of Kansas City
Be prepared to be whisked away to an enchanted academy where nothing is as it seems. Experience the majesty of the great dining hall as our artists illustrate a beautiful graphic. We’ll have fun in the not-so-ordinary life of the academy with a plethora of cartoon drawings. From drawing an enchanted forest to a day at the races with dragons, it’s nothing but fun in our classroom. The final day of the Enchanted Academy Workshop we’ll introduce our artists to pastel chalks as they create a whimsical drawing of a phoenix. No prior experience is needed. Please wear an old shirt or smock to the final day of class. Bring a bottle water and a healthy peanut free snack each day. All drawing materials provided.

Checkmate Challenge Lego Camp  Kansas City Chess Club
Checkmate Challenge Lego Camp is designed to introduce youth to chess strategy and tactics while showing kids basic engineering skills in building chess sets. The Kansas City Chess Club certified staff will show kids how to build Lego Chess Sets while showing key chess strategy tactics. There will be medals, chess books prizes, and a Chess Camp T-Shirt for all players!  Fun for both girls and boys, all skill levels welcome.  Boy Scouts can earn their Chess merit badge and Cub Scouts can earn their belt loop and pin while having fun!

In this Black Rocket classic, you will go well beyond the limitations of the traditional 2D game design classes and create an immersive 3D world. Students will learn the physics behind 3D games, explore beginner event scripting, level design, controlling the flow of gameplay, and storytelling. Teens Creative and Digital Photography  Debra Lawrence
Have people told you that you should be a photographer? Are you the one that always pulls out the camera at family events? Let’s learn how to do it right. In this class we explore using your camera in a creative way – pushing the normal limits of typical photography. We spend time working one on one exploring each individual camera and the limitations it has. We will go over the basics then delve into the world of shooting manually to break the barriers that come with the programmed modes. Students will gain more if they have a digital SLR camera with a manual mode.

Minecraft© Animators   Black Rocket
Bring your favorite Minecraft characters to life in an animated short film! Learn how studios like Pixar and Disney make movies like Inside Out and Frozen by using techniques like keyframing, tweening, texturing, and animating rigged 3D models! Student projects will be available on a password protected Black Rocket website to share with friends and family. You do not need to own a Minecraft account to use the software in this class. Students will work in pairs or teams for most of the program. Mac users can play their project at home, but will not be able to edit the project without a PC. Returning students can create more advanced projects that build on previous years.

Virtual Reality: The Future is Now!  Black Rocket
Embark on an EPIC adventure in virtual reality! In this cutting edge class, you will learn the foundations of VR design by creating your own virtual worlds, exploring simulated environments, and crafting memorable 3D experiences. At the end of the week, take home your first cardboard VR headset to show friends and family the new worlds you created. VR projects can be viewed on a website or a mobile device. Students do not need a mobile device to take the class, but to use the VR headset a camper will need access to an Android or Apple mobile device. Students will work in pairs or teams and VR projects will be available on a password protected Black Rocket website to share with friends and family.

Monsters, Creatures and Creeps Drawing Workshop  Young Rembrandts of Kansas City
Laugh-out-loud funny! Friendly and creepy. Eerie-but-exciting! These are just some of the words that best describe our Monsters, Creatures and Creeps workshop. If your child is a fan of monsters, this is the perfect fit. Over the course of f 4 days, your child will learn to draw a variety of monsters and even complete a large composition using pastels. Clues, Crimes and Culprits  Mad Science
Oh NO! The Mad Science monkey is missing! Will you help us figure out where the monkey is? How he got out? And, what he is up to? Join the Mad Science crew as we gather the evidence from the crime scene, and take it back to the lab to analyze it. As the week goes on we will use chemistry, forensics science, physics, and biology to solve the crime. Blood typing, DNA examination, and pH testing are only a few of the scientific tests our young sleuths will get to participate in.
