Description

Human services (also called social work) are helping professions that make "giving back" a career. They offer satisfying work for those who want to help other people and improve their quality of life. The field offers a wide variety of careers.

Our program provides those interested in exploring or pursing vocations in counseling, social work and psychology three ways to enter this field:

  • Associate in Arts degree. If you plan to transfer and take two years of college credit with you. Our transfer agreements make this an easy transition.
  • Associate in Applied Science degree. If you want in-depth study of a human services area, and do not plan to transfer.

You'll study basic courses in human services/social work as well as courses focusing on service to particular populations such as youth, those struggling with substance abuse and persons wrestling with mental health and behavioral challenges. Internships give you real-world experience at area social service agencies, some of them include:

The American Red Cross, The Salvation Army, Renaissance West, Comprehensive Mental Health, Imani House, Swope Parkway Health Services, Jackson County Family Court, Kansas City Community Center, MOCSA, Children's Place, Family Conservancy, Crittenton Behavioral Health, Independence School District, Hope House, Gillis, Friendship House, Missouri Division of Youth Services, Mattie Rhodes Counseling and Art Center, and many others.

Transfer Credits

While MCC does not offer a degree in this field, these lower division (freshman/sophomore level) courses move with you to a four year college or university and depending on your chosen major may apply toward your degree or as an elective. Check with your transfer school and your MCC academic advisor for the most accurate and timely transfer information.
