Metropolitan Community College gets $2.2M grant for job-training programs
Date Released: Wednesday, March 3, 2010, 12:26pm CST
Metropolitan Community College will receive a $2.2 million grant
for its programs in animal health and other in-demand fields, Missouri
Gov. Jay Nixon said Wednesday.
The Department of Economic Development financing is the first
grant awarded through the Training for Tomorrow initiative, which Nixon
launched two months ago. Nixon made the announcement during a visit to
the college’s Maple Woods campus.
According to a release, Metropolitan Community College will use the grant to establish new degrees and certificates in pet
care and animal research, and to develop an online track for the veterinary technology degree program.
The nondegree courses could be available as early as the summer, the release said. Enrollment in the degree programs is expected
to begin in January.
The grant also will help develop new coursework options in health care and supply chain integration, the release said.
Member institutions of the Missouri Community College Association were eligible to apply for financing from Training for Tomorrow.
Money for the grants comes from the Second Supplemental Disaster Recovery Community Development Block Grant, a federal program
to assist with economic recovery efforts.

$500 scholarship that is presented each fall and spring based on
academic success, financial need and a personal essay.
Dr. Chris Morrow was also presented with a state-of-the-art cardiology stethoscope for use by the instructors in lab settings.

Veterinary Technology Scholarship
Presented with a vast array of options after high school,
many college-bound graduates play musical majors. They flirt with a
variety of different career paths and academic institutions before
settling on their futures.
That's not Stephen Sallee, though.
He admits he's wanted to help animals since he was small,
and set his sights on MCC-Maple Woods' veterinary technology program to
help him reach his goal. He was recently awarded the Heart of America
Kennel Club Veterinary Technology Scholarship, which will help him
complete his one remaining year in the program.
Veterinary technology is a growing field in the Animal
Health Corridor, a swath of animal health-related businesses, college
programs and research facilities that are concentrated in the Greater
Kansas City area. The veterinary technology program at MCC-Maple Woods
is the only one in the Kansas City metro area. Currently, graduates of
the program have a 100 percent job placement rate for their field of
study.
That comes as no surprise to Stephen, who currently works
at a general veterinary practice and is preparing to transfer to the
Veterinary Specialty and Emergency Clinic (VSEC) in Johnson County. He
plans to continue his education at Kansas State University and become a
veterinarian.
Asked what kind of veterinary practice he might like to specialize in, Stephen said that he hadn't yet decided.
"I really like all aspects right now," he said.
"I'm excited to try out the emergency vet care, though, to see what that environment is like."
Cats, cows or chickens, Stephen is interested in all
animals, though he admits to being a "dog person" and an owner of five
furry friends: Bassett hounds Beatrice and Hazel and English bulldogs
Baxter, Bailey and Maggie.
