MCC-Blue River Public Safety Institute offers Fire Academy training that is recognized by the Missouri Department of Public Safety-Division of Fire Safety, which is accredited by the International Fire Service Accreditation Congress (IFSAC). Being affiliated with IFSAC offers our recruits employment eligibility across the United States since most of the states are IFSAC associated and reciprocally accept the firefighter training our graduates have accomplished.

Our Academy instructors are experienced firefighters who currently service or have served in Kansas City metropolitan area fire departments. This assures that our recruits receive effective, real-world training, which not only addresses current demands, but also remains visionary in planning optimal training for future needs in public safety areas.

All applicants must meet the following requirements before obtaining a Fire Academy applicant packet:

  • Must be at least 18 years of age (NOTE: most Fire Departments require you to be at least 21 prior to being hired);
  • Must have graduated from high school or have a GED with transcripts;
  • Must have an active MCC student ID number (go to www.mcckc.edu/getstarted to apply);
  • Must have a taken and passed a college or university English class of level 100 or higher OR have passed the MCC COMPASS test with a score of at least 72 on the reading section and at least a 70 on the writing section.

As part of the academy curriculum, each of our recruits completes the Candidate Physical Ability Test (CPAT).  Recruits may also take the B-5 Fire Service Entrance Exam (FSEE) from IPMA-HR (International Public Management Association for Human Resources) Assessment Services at a discounted price through the MCC-Blue River Testing Center.  To schedule an FSEE test, contact the Testing Center at 816.604.6434.

The MCC-Blue River Fire Academy offers two options:

  • A 16-week, full-time day academy offered in January and in August, which meets Monday - Friday, 7:30 a.m. to 5 p.m.
  • A 32-week, part-time academy offered each January, which meets Monday, Tuesday and Thursday evenings from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. and alternating Saturdays, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
