MCC Wolves Preparing for the Upcoming Season
After years of experience, Men's Head Basketball Coach Marcus Harvey is accustomed to the mystery and the challenge each season presents. A mere two seasons to hone the players' skill on the court, instill academic discipline, and prepare the young men for the next level.
Constant each season is the presence of the head coach, and the expectation he has for the program. "You have to work hard," Harvey said. "We demand that you work. At the end of every practice we stress education and getting your work done and not missing classes, not missing assignments. We make sure you take care of business."
One win away from making the 2017-18 National Tournament has resulted in much anticipation for the upcoming season. Entering his 25th season, Coach Harvey is heading up a young, hard-working team. Nine freshmen join this year's Wolf squad. Looking forward to the challenge, Coach Harvey says, "We may be young but we are training to become a quick and smart."
Key players on this year's squad include sophomore big man, Austin Johnson and sophomore captain Darius Gault. As a freshman, Johnson, who hails from Texas, averaged 18 points and 10 rebounds per game. Gault is a Kansas City (MO) native who will provide leadership for the young team. Transfers Isiah Burton (Pittsburgh State), Matt Austin (Seward County), and Dominic Fragola (State Fair) are welcome additions and should have great impact on the court for the Wolves.
Coach Harvey also welcomes two new assistant coaches this year for the men's team. Coach Pierre DaClue played for MCC (2008-09) and was honored as a two-time All American. Pierre is a graduate of Lincoln University. Also new to the Wolves staff this year is Alonzo Burton, who is a graduate of Missouri S&T with coaching experience most recently from Whitefield Academy in Kansas City. The new staff is looking forward to coaching this young group and making 2018-2019 a great Wolves season.
