All for the Children Overview
“All for the Children” is the brainchild of MCC-Blue River instructor Kim Glackin with assistance from fellow instructors Cynthia Heddlesten. MCC-Blue River also partners with the students of the Independence School District’s Little Blue Elementary School. The event is based on an idea Glackin got from a similar event in California.
“Nearly five children die every day in the United States due to child abuse and neglect,” says Glackin. “There are factors that contribute to child abuse, including poverty, financial stresses, lack of knowledge among adults about parenting skills and child development and the use of drugs and alcohol around children. About 80 percent of them are under the age of four. Our community can protect its children by educating parents about parenting and child development, and by building community support for children and their families,” she said. “Children who have been abused are 60 percent more likely to be arrested for criminal behavior.”
This event is April 8 at MCC-Blue River’s Arts & Sciences Building. It will feature a 5K run/walk, an Easter egg hunt, free dental care provided by Truman Medical Center, Public Safety Institute self-defense classes for kids, child ID kits, entertainment provided by MCC drama students, Little Blue singers and other fun activities.
