Legal and Paralegal Studies

LEGL 250 - Ethics for the Paralegal (3 credits)

Prerequisites: ENGL 101 or higher, CSIS 115, COMM 100 or COMM 102, LEGL 100, and admission into the Legal and Paralegal Studies Program. This course covers the basic principles governing the ethical practice of law for both lawyers and paralegals. This course will help the paralegal student delineate clearly between the tasks in which a paralegal can legally do and those tasks which must be done by or under the supervision of an attorney. Subjects explored include the unauthorized practice of law, conflicts of interest, confidentiality, paralegal-client relations, disciplinary procedures, fee splitting, billing, advertising, and misconduct in the law office. Students will learn methods for researching the answers to ethical dilemmas.
