  • Comprehensive simulation training: Practice with the advanced equipment used at our regional hospital partners. You will learn on high-fidelity patient simulators, mechanical ventilators, noninvasive ventilation (NIV) systems, and airway clearance devices.  
  • Premier community partnerships: Gain vital experience and mentorship at top regional hospitals and healthcare organizations, including Children’s Mercy, University Health, KU Medical Center, Liberty Hospital, North Kansas City Hospital, VA Medical Center, Research Medical Center, and Saint Luke’s Hospitals. 
  • Certification ready: Graduate prepared to earn the RRT credential by successfully completing the new 2027 NBRC Respiratory Therapy Examination (RTE)

What is a Respiratory Therapist?

Pics of Repiratory Therapist and child“Respiratory Therapists are health care professionals responsible for the care of patients with deficiencies and abnormalities of the cardiopulmonary system” (AARC).

The Respiratory Care Program prepares students for careers as Registered Respiratory Therapists (RRTs).  RRTs assess, treat, and monitor patients, often administering oxygen, inhaled medications, and provide ventilator management for patients who are unable to breathe on their own. They also educate patients on managing their conditions and provide emergency support during critical situations.

It’s a dynamic and hands-on job that blends both technical skills and patient care. You get to be part of a healthcare team, often working closely with doctors, nurses, and other specialists to improve patient outcomes.

Accreditation

The Bachelor of Applied Science in Respiratory Care program at Metropolitan Community College, CoARC program number 200698, located at Penn Valley (Health Science Institute, 3444 Broadway, Kansas City, MO 64111), holds Provisional Accreditation from the Commission on Accreditation for Respiratory Care (www.coarc.com).

“This status signifies that a program with an Approval of Intent has demonstrated sufficient compliance with the Standards (through submission of an acceptable Provisional Accreditation Self Study Report (PSSR) and any other documentation required by the CoARC, as well as satisfactory completion of an initial on-site visit), to be allowed to admit students. It is recognized as an accredited program by the National Board for Respiratory Care (NBRC), which provides enrolled students who complete the program with eligibility for the Respiratory Care Credentialing Examination(s). The program will remain on Provisional Accreditation until it achieves Continuing Accreditation.”
