Tutoring at MCC-Maple Woods

The MCC-Maple Woods Learning Center provides students comfortable spaces and trained, supportive staff to assist students as they work to achieve their educational goals.

The Learning Center offers one-on-one and small-group tutoring, handouts, lab materials, laptops and calculators for student use. All services are provided free of charge to students currently enrolled in MCC courses.

Hours of operation

MCC-Maple Woods tutoring hours continually change. For current hours, contact 816.604.3190 for reading/writing or 816.604.3403 for math/science.

Math and science lab

The MCC-Maple Woods math and science lab, located in MS121, offers free assistance in mathematics, chemistry, biology and physics to MCC students. Help is available on a walk-in basis and is provided by peer tutors and faculty from the math and science departments.

Additional services

In addition to free walk-in tutoring, the math and science lab provides:

  • A comfortable, friendly place for independent or group study
  • Access to math and science textbooks and solution manuals
  • Lectures on DVD
  • Laptops to use in the lab
  • Charging stations for personal devices
  • A variety of helpful handouts including reference sheets and graph paper
  • Calculators for lab or classroom use
  • Anatomical models
  • Microscope and slides for a variety of biology classes
  • Rock and mineral sets with hardness kits

Reading and writing Lab

Our trained tutors and learning coordinator, located in HU 105, offer assistance for writing essays and research papers for any course. We will not proofread or correct errors, but we will help students recognize errors in organization, grammar, citations, punctuation and style. We will teach students strategies to become a stronger writer and to create better papers.

Reading

Our learning coordinator and tutors provide individualized instruction in reading and study strategies to help students improve comprehension and retention in most courses.

Content Tutoring

We provide tutoring for different content areas depending on the availability of tutors. Typically, we provide help for psychology, sociology, history, philosophy, speech and Spanish. Because the availability of tutoring for specific content areas varies, appointments are required.

Appointments

Appointments are suggested, but not required for one-on-one tutoring in reading or writing. One-on-one appointments may be scheduled for one hour. Dependent upon tutor availability, one-on-one tutoring is also available on a walk-in basis. Drop-in tutoring is available with no time limit. During drop-in tutoring, students work independently, but our tutors and learning coordinator are available to answer questions.
