Heavy metal is helping MCC students turn up the heat on their HVAC training.

Thanks to a $50,000 grant from Metallica’s All Within My Hands foundation, Metropolitan Community College is bringing advanced inverter technology to its HVAC program at the Advanced Technical Skills Institute (ATSI) in Kansas City. 

MCC is one of just 18 institutions nationwide selected for the eighth cohort of the Metallica Scholars Initiative, which supports career and technical education programs preparing students for skilled-trades careers.

The grant is helping MCC incorporate Mitsubishi Electric inverter technology into HVAC training, giving students hands-on experience with energy-efficient equipment increasingly used in the industry.

Inverter-driven systems use variable-speed technology to adjust heating and cooling output based on demand. Students will gain experience diagnosing, troubleshooting and servicing the types of systems they may encounter in the workforce. 

Located at 2944 Troost Ave. in Kansas City, ATSI offers hands-on education in HVAC, welding, construction, precision machining, electrical technology and industrial maintenance.

For MCC’s future HVAC technicians, this is one heavy metal investment that rocks — providing students with the technology and training they need to turn up the volume on their future careers.
